Last weekend, the GTA experienced its first snowstorm of the year, and not everyone was prepared. At Merit Insurance, we know that preparation is key when it comes to staying safe on the roads and protecting what matters most. As Ontario gears up for the colder months ahead, it’s also the time when insurance claims tend to rise.

Why the early snowfall matters

Snow and ice pose hazards more quickly than expected. According to the Ontario government’s winter driving guidelines, many winter collisions happen simply because drivers are going too fast for the conditions. With the first storm hitting early, the “claims season” for winter-related accidents has already begun and Ontario drivers need to get ready.

How to prepare for winter driving

Here are a few steps you can take to reduce your risk on the roads and make the claims process smoother if an incident does occur.

1. Get your vehicle winter-ready

  • Install and properly inflate winter tires; they perform much better in temperatures below 7°C.
  • Check your brakes, battery, lights, wipers, and fluids.
  • Clear all snow and ice from your roof, hood, and windows before every trip.

2. Adjust your driving habits

  • Slow down and increase your following distance; stopping can take up to 12 times longer on icy roads.
  • Avoid sudden braking or sharp turns.
  • Be cautious on bridges and shaded areas, as they freeze first.
  • Never use cruise control on icy or snow-covered roads.

3. Pack a winter emergency kit
Include a scraper, shovel, warm clothing, flashlight, sand or kitty litter, and extra washer fluid. Keep your gas tank at least half full and check the weather before heading out.
