Winter Driving Tips | Merit Insurance Brokers Inc., Toronto, Waterdown, Ontario, Canada

Winter Driving Tips: Staying Safe on Icy Roads

Winter in Canada can be breathtakingly beautiful, but driving can also be much more challenging. Slippery roads, snowstorms, and freezing temperatures can turn short drives into stressful experiences. Thankfully, a little preparation and the right mindset can go a long way toward keeping you safe. Here are some straightforward tips to help you handle icy roads this winter.

1. Get Your Car Winter-Ready

Think of your car as your partner in braving winter roads. Switching to winter tires is one of the best steps you can take since they’re designed to grip better on ice and snow. Don’t forget to check essentials like brakes, the battery, and windshield wipers to ensure everything works as it should. Packaging an emergency kit with blankets, a flashlight, snacks, water, a small shovel, and a first aid kit is also a good idea. These items can be lifesavers if you get stuck or stranded.

2. Adjust Your Driving Style

Winter driving isn’t about getting there fast—it’s about safety. Slow down and drive at a speed that matches the conditions. Keep extra distance between your car and the one ahead since stopping on icy roads takes longer. Avoid sudden moves, like sharp turns or hard braking, as these can cause skids. The key is to stay smooth and steady with your controls.

3. Stay Aware of What’s Ahead

Being prepared starts with staying informed. Always check the weather forecast before heading out so you know what to expect. Be mindful of black ice, which is nearly invisible and often forms on bridges or shaded parts of the road. Use your headlights to make yourself more visible to other drivers, especially in snowy or low-visibility conditions.

4. Skid Control: What to Do When It Happens

If you find yourself in a skid, the most important thing is to stay calm. Steer into the skid—point the wheel in the direction you want to go—and ease off the pedals. Avoid slamming on the brakes or hitting the gas, as this can worsen things. Letting the car slow down naturally can help you regain control.

5. Be Ready for the Unexpected

Winter driving can be unpredictable, so it’s essential to be prepared. Let someone know your route and expected arrival time, and make sure your phone is fully charged before you leave. If you get stranded, stay in your car to stay warm and safe while waiting for help.
