Ron Berry

Ron has been the President of Merit since its inception in June 1981. He has enjoyed an extensive career, first on the insurance company side working with Commercial Life and Zurich Insurance, before taking the helm at Merit Insurance Brokers, Inc. Ron is a Fellow of the Insurance Institute of Canada (FCIP) and has completed the two-year Life Underwriters course. He served on the Brokers Advisory Council of General Accident Insurance Company and is a past Chair of the Economical Mutual Insurance Company’s National Broker Advisory Council.

Carolyn Vickers

Carolyn gained her experience as a personal lines underwriter at Wellington Insurance Company before joining Merit in 1989. She obtained her RIBO license in 1990 and became the brokerage’s first full time underwriter. Carolyn earned her CIP designation in 1995 and her CPIB in 2007. She was appointed underwriting manager in 1997 and Merit’s Principal Broker with RIBO in 2003. Carolyn was appointed Secretary-Treasurer in 2005, and became Chief Operating Officer in 2010. Carolyn was appointed to the Board of Directors in 2016. Carolyn’s exceptional industry knowledge has guided Merit to new, cutting edge insurance technology and streamlined Merit’s processes.

Maria Berry

Maria joined Merit in 1981. She obtained her RIBO license in 1984, her unrestricted license in 1993 and earned her CIP in 1989 and CPIB in 2007. Maria is Vice President of Merit Insurance Brokers, Inc. and is directly responsible for the operation of the Waterdown office, as well as handling her own book of business.

Paul Dahlin

Before joining Merit Insurance Brokers, Inc. in 2001 as an Equity Partner and becoming one of Merit’s Principals, Paul held various senior management positions with SAFECO Insurance Companies, The Dominion of Canada Insurance Company and also with The Economical Insurance Group. These positions included underwriting, marketing and operational management and encompassed regions across Canada. A graduate of the University of Guelph and a Fellow of the Insurance Institute of Canada, Paul is currently registered with RIBO for all lines of Property & Casualty Insurance.

Dean Morrissey

Dean earned a degree in economics and business from Wilfrid Laurier University in 1982, and held senior executive positions with the largest commercial insurer in Canada. Dean joined Merit in 2010, bringing an extensive knowledge of both commercial and group insurance programs. Dean has an unrestricted technical license and is Fellow of the Insurance Institute of Canada. Dean also was Advisory board Member – The Wedge Group until 2009. Dean is currently a member of the UNICA Insurance Broker Advisory Counsel – 2011 to present.

Ray Bednarz

Ray began his insurance career in 1968. He has been a President and owner of Park Insurance, and Vice President of Sedgewick/Marsh Insurance Brokers. Ray specializes in equine and farm insurance, with a managing role of bloodstock at Merit and overseeing Gerling‘s Global/GCAN bloodstock contracts. Ray has been a chair of the president’s council at North Waterloo Farmer’s Mutual (NWFM), Director of Canadian Trotting Association, and a founding member of the managing brokers program at NFWM.

Doug Berry

Doug first received his brokers licence in 1997. Doug is both RIBO licenced and life licensed as well as a University of Toronto graduate in East Asian studies. Doug can speak, read and write Mandarin Chinese.

Alexandra Clarke

Alexandra holds a Diploma in Business – Insurance from Seneca College. After graduating in April 2011, she joined a small brokerage before moving to the insurance company side, where she spent 4 years. After obtaining her RIBO licence in October 2015, she joined Merit that December and now handles both Commercial and Personal Insurance. She obtained her CIP in 2016.

Susan Doble

Susan acquired her RIBO license in 1989. She joined Merit in 1992 as part of the Toronto Insurance Brokers acquisition and obtained her CIP in 2006. Susan was promoted to Commercial Lines Manager in 2009. Along with Commercial Insurance, Susan handles Personal Lines Underwriting for Traders General and Aviva Insurance as well as her own book of business.

Jillian Gasdia

Jillian joined Merit in 2009 as a part-time filing clerk, and became a full-time administrative clerk in September 2010. She graduated with honours from George Brown College in Business Administration & Human Resources and obtained her RIBO license in March 2011. She earned her CAIB in 2013 and her CPIB in 2016.

Roneth Gementiza

Roneth studied accounting at Centennial College and began her insurance career in 1996 with MultiLine Insurance Brokers as a customer service representative. She obtained her RIBO license in 1997. Roneth joined Merit in July 2005.

Conrad Kipping

Conrad has an unrestricted RIBO and Life License. He has been with Merit since its inception. Conrad loves all things insurance and is not planning on retiring anytime soon.

Barb Knox

Barb joined Merit as a part-time office clerk, and joined full time upon her graduation from Loyalist College in 2009. Barb obtained her RIBO license in 2010. Barb assists Merit’s Chief Operating Officer and is actively involved in the development and implementation of internal systems and innovations. Barb works with the brokers and the insurance companies to issue and administer policies.

Kathleen Magisano

Kathleen gained bookkeeping experience in both a financial institution and a property management company. She became licensed in 1980 after joining the brokerage, Harrison & Chamak. She joined J.M. Dickson in 1990 and became their office manager. As part of the J.M. Dickson brokerage, Kathleen joined Merit in November 1994. She currently manages Merit’s largest commercial account.

Stephanie Mills

Stephanie joined Merit in 2014 and obtained her RIBO license in 2000 and managed her family‘s insurance brokerage until it was sold in 2012. Before then, Stephanie worked at a major insurance carrier for 7 years. She graduated from UWO in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Stephanie provides customer support in Merit’s Waterdown office.

Joey Papalia

Joey joined Merit in 2011 after attending the Mohawk College insurance program and obtaining his RIBO license. Joey handles both commercial and personal lines insurance.

Andrew Begley

Andrew joined Merit in 2015 as a summer student to assist with filing. In 2016 he obtained his RIBO license, in order to assist the other brokers. Andrew is currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Commerce degree program at Queen’s University.

Henry Monis

Henry Monis is the third generation in his family to work for Merit. He earned his RIBO license in February 2017 and joined Merit in March. Henry is currently focusing on personal and commercial lines, and is planning to attain his life license in the near future.

Priscilla L. Muere

Priscilla’s 30 years of experience in both general and life insurance earned the trust of her clients and friends. She started building her business portfolio with Multiline Insurance in 1986 and joined Merit in 2005 for a wide variety of markets and stable opportunities. Priscilla is a Business Administration graduate of Philippine Woman’s University.

Greg Parker

Greg holds a Level 1 RIBO license and came to Merit 2007 after working in the transportation industry as a regional manager for a major courier company. He obtained his RIBO license that same year. He enjoys officiating hockey in the winter and golfing in the summer.

Edward Rifol

Edward joined Merit in 2007 as a file clerk. Edward attended Seneca College and obtained his RIBO license in 2008. He is currently working as a customer service representative and handling his own book of business.

Shirley (Sally) Rifol

Sally attended the University of Santo Thomas in Manila. She immigrated to Canada in 1982 and began her insurance career in the life department with Plan Estates Insurance Brokers. Sally became the Office Administrator at Multiline Insurance Brokers before joining Merit in 2005. Sally holds her RIBO license.

Mary Jane Rivera

Mary Jane joined Merit as a full-time employee in 1994 and acquired her RIBO license in 1996 and her CIP designation in 2006. Born in Manila, the Philippines, Mary Jane is fluent in Tagalog. Mary Jane provides support to the underwriting manager in processing new business and endorsement. She also handles her own book of business.

Suzanne Salloum

Suzanne was a part-time employee at Merit while attending York University and joined the company on a full-time basis in 1989 after completing her Bachelor of Arts degree. She obtained her RIBO license in 1989 and her CIP designation in 2007. Suzanne is Executive Assistant to our president.

Glen Smith

Glen is a seasoned farm and livestock insurance specialist, with a broad agricultural background. He joined Merit in 1999, and was instrumental in the opening of a new branch office in Flamborough, which relocated to Waterdown in 2006. Glen is known throughout North America for his champion “6 Horse Hitch” team of Clydesdales that have been shown competitively at prominent events such as the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto and many state fairs in the U.S. He is past president of the Canadian Fieldsman of the Canadian Angus Association and of The Rockton Agricultural Society. He is also past chairman of the 4H Queen’s Guineas.

Bob Snelson

Bob earned a Bachelor‘s degree in business and economics from Marist College in New York. He worked for two major insurers in various management positions spanning over 36 years. Bob obtained his Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation in 2001. Bob joined Merit’s Waterdown office in March 2011 and has an unrestricted technical RIBO license.

Barbara Swimmer

Barbara holds a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in History from the University of Toronto. After six years title searching for two Toronto law firms, she joined her late father at Lou Swimmer Insurance in August 1983 after obtaining both her RIBO & Life licenses that year. Barbara became a full partner in Lou Swimmer Insurance in 1990 and obtained her Level 2 Unrestricted RIBO license in 1993. She joined Merit in July 1995 when Lou Swimmer Insurance merged with Merit Insurance Brokers. Barbara specializes in personal lines insurance, life insurance, retirement planning and long term care insurance.

Sharon White

Sharon joined Merit’s team of insurance specialists in 2016. Sharon has a background in finance and is able to utilize her vast sales and client service experience to understand her clients and provide the best coverage to suit their needs. As a long-time resident of Carlisle, Sharon has been actively involved in coaching, fundraising and community events.

Annette Liwanag

Annette is Merit’s receptionist and the first person to greet clients when they call or visit Merit’s Toronto Head Office. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the University of the Philippines. Annette joined Merit in July 2016.

Christine Piper

Chris worked with Guardian Insurance and The Hartford in an accounting function before joining Merit in 1987. Currently she works in the brokerage’s life department. Chris is also responsible for processing new business and endorsements.

Yvette Seegobin

Yvette joined Merit in 2014 as receptionist in the Waterdown office. She graduated from Mohawk College in 2001 with a Diploma in Executive-Office Administration.

Roger Williams

Roger was employed in the computer systems industry and worked as a systems coordinator for Real Time Insurance Systems (C.G.I.) before joining Merit in 1990. Having obtained his RIBO and Life licenses, Roger has a special interest in motorcycles, boating and the hospitality industry.
